Upgrade WindowsS 10 To 11 In-Place

Many of companies are trying to upgrade their device from Windows 10 to 11 after Microsoft released the EOS I was working last two months with one of the clients who request to move from Windows 10 – 21H2 to Windows 11 without going to Windows 10 -22H2 because just one year extra.

After creating a Task Sequence to re-image all new workstations, the client asked for the way to in-place upgrade, they explained to me they have thousands of workstations that they are not going to re-image these workstations between now till June, 2024 (EOS).

I will explain two solutions in this post,

  1. Upgrading using Task Sequence.
  2. Upgrading using (KB) for Update.
  3. Upgrading using Task Sequence:-

to upgrade OS using Task Sequence you can use “Upgrade Package” , before you start here, you need to download the new OS Win11 and add it to your Operating System ( I am not going to explain this in this post, you can review my previous one), just showing these screenshots to add a new OS to Operating System Image (this will look at .WIM file)

then check the path to where you save WIM file , also pick the right image index that matches your company OS, x64 or x86 Architecture.

Right client and create a New TS , then select “Upgrade an operating system from an upgrade package”

Add some information to your TS as you want

In this step you need to ensure to pick the right path where you save (.Setup) file NOT (.WIM) with index

In my case I did not install any updates or extra Apps for my client, so this is up to you, then finish the TS.

Now we have to deploy the TS to target collection in my case I deployed it to you Win 11 Collection, then made it available for testing purposes, and availability was ASAP

Task sequence showed up in the Software Center and was installed successfully within 45 minutes to 1 hour, the only downside in TS is will show up on the user’s screen which the end user can stop the end-user from doing the work, of course, you can make it run after business hours.

2. Upgrading using (KB) for Update :-

This option you can deploy and as an update, first make ensure to search (22H2) under Software Library > Windows Servicing> All Windows Feature Updates you should see something like “Windows 11(business editions) Version 22H2, x64”

Here, do the same as you do to any monthly updates, download it then deploy it to the collection.

This update will be shown under “Updates” in Software Center this KB size is 3.2GB

This way took almost 46+ minutes, but the good side is it is not going to interact with the user and can be run in the background.

Hoping this will help.

Happy weekend!
